A single collagen sachet selling for the equivalent of tens of pounds is not a supplement.
In 2023 Thai authorities found drug mixtures packaged inside collagen and coffee sachets and sold through social media. What separates this from most drug formats is that the person who ends up taking it does not have to be the person who chose to.
Where this came from
On 26 April 2023, Thailand’s National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment issued a warning that drug mixtures had been found packaged inside collagen and coffee sachets and sold through social media. The warning came from Dr. Manas Pothaporn, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services, and Dr. Sarayut Boonchaipanitwattana, Director of the Institute.
The reason for the packaging is straightforward: a sachet in a bag does not invite a search. The word “collagen” also functioned as the code name for the product in the transaction itself.
That warning is from 2023. This article makes no claim about how common the practice is now, because no current data exists. What has not changed is the method, which is the part worth recognising.
What was in the sachets
Five components, mixed together in a single sachet.
- MDMA, a stimulant
- Methamphetamine, a stimulant
- Ketamine, a dissociative with hallucinogenic effects
- Sleeping pills
- Caffeine
Two stimulants and a sedative in the same preparation means the body is receiving contradictory instructions at once.
Why this particular mixture is dangerous
The risk does not come from any single ingredient. It comes from the body being given opposing instructions at once.
MDMA and methamphetamine are stimulants: heart rate up, blood pressure up, the system driven. Sleeping pills do the reverse, depressing the central nervous system and respiration. Caffeine adds another stimulant layer on top.
Combining stimulants with a sedative in one sachet creates two problems. The heart works hard while breathing is suppressed. And the person feels able to continue, because the stimulants mask the drowsiness that would otherwise be the warning that they have had too much.
The Institute’s warning describes what happens when several of these are taken together in quantity, or with alcohol: psychiatric symptoms, auditory hallucination, paranoia, aggression, and in severe cases cardiac arrest and respiratory depression, which can be fatal.
With no labelling, no standard and formulations varying between batches, someone who used one sachet without incident has learned nothing at all about the next one.
You do not have to choose it to be exposed to it
This is the clearest difference from other drug formats, and the reason it is worth knowing about even in a household where nobody uses anything.
A collagen sachet is not hidden the way drugs are hidden. It sits in a bag, a drawer, or a fridge alongside other food. Anyone who picks it up and makes a drink from it, believing it to be a supplement, is dosed without knowing.
The people most at risk from that are children in the house, older relatives, and anyone on regular medication, since stimulants interact badly with cardiac and blood pressure drugs.
If you find a sachet you are unsure about, separate it from other food immediately. Do not throw it away. If someone in the house becomes unwell, that packet is the only information a doctor will have.
What to look for
Both indicators are about the packet rather than the powder.
Price. These were sold in the thousands of baht per sachet, which is not what a supplement costs. A sachet priced far above the shelf equivalent is the first signal.
The seal. There may be signs of the packet having been cut open and resealed, because the original contents were replaced. Compare the seal line against an unopened packet of anything similar.
The powder itself tells you nothing. Ground drugs and supplement powder look the same. Do not taste, smell or dissolve anything to find out. It gives no answer and risks exposure.
What to do if you find one
If there are physical symptoms now, treat it as an emergency. Severe palpitations, chest pain, slow or laboured breathing, seizure, extreme confusion, or unresponsiveness mean calling 1669, the Thai emergency medical number, immediately. Tell them the substance is unknown, because that changes how it is treated.
Keep the packet. If a hospital visit follows, bring it. It is the only information the doctors will have.
Do not confront someone while they are intoxicated, and do not open with searching a room. Searching produces the object and usually costs you the conversation you need later.
Start with assessment. How long, how often, alongside what else, and what the use is doing for the person. FAQ
Are collagen supplements dangerous? No. Collagen is an ordinary legal supplement. This is about traffickers using supplement packaging as a container. The signals are an unusual price and a resealed packet, not the product category itself.
Can I test something myself if I am unsure? No. Tasting, smelling or dissolving it gives no reliable answer and risks accidental exposure. Identifying a substance properly requires laboratory equipment.
What if someone has already taken it without knowing? If there are physical symptoms, call 1669 and bring the packet. If there are none, do not leave the person alone for the next several hours. The sedative component can take effect later than the stimulants.
Is this still happening? The warning cited here is from 2023, and we have no verified current data on prevalence. The underlying method, hiding drugs in ordinary consumer packaging, appears in other forms as well.
